10,300 words this week and sitting at 111,400 overall. Only a few days now until the second draft is finished.

The Weekend Roundup – 30th June

The second draft has passed the 100,000 words mark and now sits at 101,000 in total. Not bad for my birthday week. I think there is around another 10-15,000 words before this draft is finished which should take me another week and a half or so.

This weeks links:

  • Doma defeated on a historic day for U.S. gay rights – I am a big support of equality for all regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation so it was great to see the decisions the Supreme Court made this week on Doma and Prop 8. I live in perhaps the most liberal place in the UK, Brighton, which is also the country’s gay capital. I love living here because it is so liberal and embraces so many of the values I hold dear. It is always a great day that sees the cause of equality advanced somewhere on this planet.
  • Reporting Harassment at a Convention: A First Person How-To – this has been re-posted on many sites and shows there is still a way to go when it comes to equality, and it will take work and dedication from all of us to make things like sexism and misogyny to go disappear.

The Weekend Roundup – 23rd of June

I’ve managed to keep my consistent pace. 10,000 more words done to bring me up to 90,700 words in total.

The Weekend Roundup – 16th June

Another week where I hit my 10,000 word goal total. Now up to 80,700 and have the end in sight for the second draft. Should be four weeks more and then it is done.

Links:

  • Three excellent pieces on sexism at terribleminds that generated a lot of discussion. This is an important issue for me as I think sexism has no place in the modern world and it was interesting seeing the wind range of responses to these articles. Unfortunately that included some people who talked about the ‘myth’ of rape culture and generally missed the point by several hundred miles. Rape culture is a thing, and it is something that should be talked about and dealt with just like many other parts of sexism.
  • Great TED talk from the writer of Wall-E – So much good information in that video for writers.
  • Write a story, not a setting – A great post on reddit that talks about how characters drive books and make them interesting, not the setting.

The Weekend Roundup – 9th June

A day late with this update as I couldn’t log into wordpress last night.

Managed 10,000 words again and the second draft is sitting at 70,600 words.

Links:

  • Iain Banks has died – a sad loss to the world of books. I’m glad I decided to give the Culture books a second go after not being too fussed by Consider Phlebas. I loved Player of Games, and he created one of the most vivid sci-fi universes there has ever been. It was good to have one that gave a hopeful vision of the future instead of despair.
  • 25 Things To Know About Sexism & Misogyny In Writing & Publishing – A great article from Chuck Wending about some of the problems there are and solutions to them.
  • How Much Do We Know? – A new update on Rocketpunk Manifesto that asks a big question.

The Weekend Roundup – 2nd June

Another week, another 10,000 words.
Second draft now sits at 60,000+ words. Total word count still looking to be around 110,000, and already got a list of some changes I’m going to make before I get an editor involved.
